Head Shot of Commissioner Ernesto Cardenas

Ernesto Cárdenas is a seasoned executive and dedicated public servant with more than 35 years of leadership experience in infrastructure, facilities management, and environmental compliance. Appointed by Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa and confirmed by the Los Angeles City Council, he first served on the Board of Public Works from 2007 to 2009. In his current role, Cárdenas helps guide policy and oversight for one of the City’s largest departments, committed to delivering essential services and building sustainable, equitable infrastructure for all Angelenos.

Cárdenas retired in 2021 following a distinguished career with SBC Services Inc. and AT&T, where he managed large-scale corporate real estate portfolios spanning over 500 buildings and millions of square feet across California, Nevada, Idaho, and Montana. His work included critical infrastructure upgrades, petroleum storage tank compliance, and mechanical and life safety system replacements—managing dozens of projects annually valued at up to $7 million. He brings a results-driven, solutions-focused approach to every challenge, shaped by a strong foundation in engineering and construction management.

Ernesto holds a Master of Business Administration from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is fluent in Spanish and passionate about civic engagement, youth development, and community service.

Outside of his professional contributions, Cárdenas is an active community leader. He has served as a volunteer member of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses since 1993 and currently sits on its Board of Directors, where he chairs the Community Outreach & Events Committee. He is also a founding member of the Andrés y María Cárdenas Family Foundation, which has provided scholarships and youth support in the San Fernando Valley since 1997. He served as the Foundation’s President from 2001 to 2019. Additionally, he volunteers as an Assistant Scoutmaster with Boy Scout Troop 94 in Sylmar, California.

Cárdenas finds joy in spending time with his family—his wife, their three sons, and granddaughter. His hobbies include hiking, going to the movies, and playing pickleball with his sons.
