Commissioner Steve Kang was appointed by Mayor Karen Bass to the Board of Public Works for the City of Los Angeles. He brings a distinguished track record of public service and leadership to the role. Prior to this appointment, Commissioner Kang served as Vice President of the Central Area Planning Commission.

Commissioner Kang’s career has been centered around civic engagement and community empowerment and spans a diverse range of impactful roles, including Director of External Affairs at the Koreatown Youth & Community Center (KYCC), a $20 million multi-service nonprofit organization that provides vital social services such as mental health counseling, youth programming, affordable housing, financial literacy education, and environmental sustainability initiatives. His professional career also includes serving as a District Director in the California State Assembly, and as the Executive Director of the Korean American Coalition–Los Angeles.

Widely respected for his contributions and talent, Commissioner Kang has been recognized by many organizations including the Los Angeles County Democratic Party, the Empowerment Congress, the Korean American Federation of Los Angeles (KAFLA), and the Democratic Party of the San Fernando Valley.

Commissioner Kang holds a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University and a Master of Science from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

A proud longtime resident of Koreatown, Commissioner Kang cherishes his role as a devoted husband and father of two. Known for his passion for culinary exploration and as a self-described foodie, Commissioner Kang enjoys discovering all the various flavors and dishes that make Los Angeles a global food capital.
