On October 18, 2023, LA Sanitation & Environment (LASAN) donated reusable food ware to Pupuseria Cuzcatlán Restaurant in Pacoima. As part of the Los Angeles Sanitation and Environment’s (LASAN) Reusable Foodware Microgrant Program, food establishments with dine-in operations within Boyle Heights, Pacoima, South Los Angeles, and Wilmington will be able to participate for such a grant. The program aims to reduce the consumption of single-use or disposable plastics while assisting food service establishments with financial support.
As part of the zero-emission plan by 2050, the City of Los Angeles designed this program to help restaurant owners transition to sustainable, environmentally friendly practices. Reducing plastic waste promotes healthier climate change, reduces chemical pollution, protects marine ecosystems, and decreases harm to our landfills. LA Sanitation & Environment (LASAN) has taken on the mounting task of combating the harmful effects of plastic waste off city streets, sewers, and landfills.
The program received $600,000 in approved funds to be used to purchase biodegradable and reusable foodware supplies. Eligible food service establishments will receive reusable food (e.g., plates, cups, bowls, etc.) and foodware accessories (e.g., utensils, napkins, straws, etc.). The program is on a need basis. Each applicant’s need will be evaluated to determine the quantity and type of supplies needed.
