Commissioner Steve Kang Makes History as First Asian American President of LA Board of Public Works During AANHPI Heritage Month

In a landmark moment for representation and public leadership, Commissioner Steve Kang has been elected President of the Los Angeles Board of Public Works—becoming the first Asian American to hold the position in the Board’s history. His election comes during Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, underscoring the significance of his leadership at a time when visibility and equity are central to the city’s values.

Appointed to the Board by Mayor Karen Bass, Commissioner Kang brings decades of civic engagement and advocacy to his new role. His career includes service as Vice President of the Central Area Planning Commission and leadership at key community organizations such as the Koreatown Youth & Community Center (KYCC), a $20 million nonprofit that delivers essential services across Los Angeles—from mental health care to environmental sustainability.

Commissioner Kang’s professional journey reflects a lifelong commitment to empowering underserved communities. His experience includes roles as a District Director in the California State Assembly and as Executive Director of the Korean American Coalition–Los Angeles. Throughout his career, he has worked to ensure marginalized voices are heard and represented in decision-making spaces.

His election is being celebrated as a historic milestone within the AANHPI community, highlighting the growing presence of Asian American leaders in public service. Commissioner Kang has been recognized by organizations such as the Los Angeles County Democratic Party, Empowerment Congress, and the Korean American Federation of Los Angeles for his service and leadership.

A graduate of Columbia University and the London School of Economics, Commissioner Kang is a proud Koreatown resident, husband, father of two, and enthusiastic foodie who embraces the cultural diversity that defines Los Angeles.

As Board President, he will oversee public infrastructure, services, and sustainability projects critical to the city’s future. His leadership during AANHPI Heritage Month is a powerful reminder of how far the city has come—and how representation continues to shape a more inclusive Los Angeles.
