LOS ANGELES, CA (January 31, 2023)—Los Angeles City Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez (Council District 7) and Board of Public Works (BPW) Commissioner Susana Reyes yesterday presented a check for $19,000.45 to the San Fernando Valley Japanese American Community Center, which is located in Pacoima.

This donation was made available through the dissolution of the Tillman Japanese Garden Visitor's Center Foundation (CF 22-0442 adopted by Council and the Mayor in June 2022 and adopted by the Board of Public Works in October 2021).

“I’m thrilled that the San Fernando Valley Japanese American Community Center will be benefiting from these funds,” said Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez. “This enables the Center to continue doing its incredible work preserving and promoting Japanese culture.”

"These funds belong to the community, so it is a pleasure to see them returned to be used by and for the community," said BPW Commissioner Susana Reyes.

These funds were collected by the Tillman Japanese Garden Visitor's Center Foundation. As indicated in the Articles of Incorporation, any monies collected and not used by the Foundation before dissolution must be distributed to "such organization organized and operated exclusively for charitable, literary, and educational purposes.”

The funds awarded to the San Fernando Valley Japanese American Community Center were voted on by the Japanese Garden Mayor's Citizens' Advisory Committee on November 21, 2019.
