The Department of Public Works Celebrates Milestone in Bus Shelter Program with 150th Installation

BSS Bus Shelter Program with 150th Installation

On June 5, 2025, the City of Los Angeles celebrated a major milestone in its Sidewalk and Transit Amenities Program (STAP) with the installation of its 150th modern bus shelter. The event brought together city officials, community members, and transit advocates to highlight the City’s commitment to creating a more comfortable, accessible, and equitable transit experience for Angelenos.

Managed by the Bureau of Street Services (StreetsLA), STAP aims to install 3,000 new shelters citywide—with the goal of ensuring that 75% of bus riders in every Council District can access shelters that offer shade, seating, and safety.

“This is especially important in communities like Koreatown—one of the most transit-dependent and densely populated neighborhoods in the city,” said Board of Public Works President Steve Kang during the event. “STAP brings relief from the heat, a safer wait, and a more comfortable commute to thousands of daily riders here and throughout our City.”

The new shelters include features such as improved lighting, accessible seating, and the potential for future amenities like Wi-Fi and phone charging stations. In addition to comfort, the shelters help improve transit equity by prioritizing neighborhoods that have historically lacked infrastructure investment.

So far, the program has positively impacted over 20,000 riders, and the City plans to reach 250 shelters installed by the end of 2025.

STAP represents a critical investment not only in transit infrastructure but in public health, safety, and climate resilience—especially as the region faces hotter, longer summers and growing ridership needs.
