earth day

April 22 is Earth Day and there are many ways you can participate. What comes to mind when we hear of Earth Day is climate change and global warming. However, that is not all this day is about. If you don’t know much about the origins of Earth Day and why it is celebrated, here is a quick informational guide as to why Earth Day is celebrated worldwide.

Earth Day is an annual celebration that raises awareness of the need to protect the planet’s natural resources for future generations. On this day we also applaud environmental achievements that have improved the quality of life on earth. It started in 1970 when millions of people in the U.S. gathered to demonstrate the importance of protecting our planet. Today, Earth Day is celebrated globally with partnerships in 192 countries and billions of people.

The need for environmental awareness is widespread and urgent. The advances in environmental protection have come far since 1970, with changes in legislation such as the Clean Water Act of 1972. The City of Los Angeles also has protections in place, such as the Watershed Protection Program and continuous environmental monitoring to assure Angelenos are staying compliant. It is important to remember planet earth is the common denominator between all humans. It is our shared space and the place we all call home.

To honor Earth Day, LA Sanitation & Environment will be hosting Earth Day LA. The event combines a variety of exhibitions and entertainment for the family. Kids will be able to explore sanitation trucks, honk the horn, and witness a composting demonstration. It is a great opportunity to meet LA Sanitation and Environment friendly faces and learn about recycling programs. See you there!
