Earlier today, Board of Public Works Vice President Jenny Chavez spearheaded a visit from students from the Girls Academic Leadership Academy (GALA), the first and only all-girls public STEM school in both LAUSD and the entire state of California. The girls participate in SPARK LA, which is a partnership with HNTB, a leading engineering consulting firm. The event, held in the Boardroom at City Hall, aimed to inspire young women to pursue careers in STEM fields within the public sector.
The day began at 9:00 AM with an interactive presentation and Q&A session featuring representatives from various City Bureaus. Experts from LA Sanitation spoke about environmental work, while the Bureau of Contract Administration (BCA) explained their role in construction, contract oversight, and inspections. Additionally, staff from the Bureau of Engineering highlighted the importance of public-sector engineers and their essential contributions to the city’s infrastructure.
Following the session, students joined the Board of Public Works meeting, where they were recognized for completing HNTB’s SPARK LA program, a specialized initiative focused on engineering and STEM careers. The Board presented each student with a certificate of recognition, celebrating their achievements and dedication to learning. A brief recess for photo opportunities followed, marking the special occasion.
Vice President Jenny Chavez emphasized the importance of introducing young women to STEM careers within the public sector, ensuring they saw the many opportunities available in fields like engineering, environmental science, and construction management.
“Looking at these students, I see the future leaders who will shape our city's infrastructure, environmental initiatives, and public spaces.” said Chavez. “Their dedication to pursuing knowledge in STEM fields at such a young age is both inspiring and promising for the future of Los Angeles.”
The event concluded with a presentation led by Cecilia Vong from HNTB, who guided students through the final segment of their SPARK LA journey, reinforcing the critical role of women in STEM and public works.
This initiative highlighted the City’s commitment to diversity in STEM fields and ensuring young women have access to public service mentorship, education, and career opportunities.
