Shine LA

On Saturday, June 27, President Steve Kang, Commissioners John Grant, and Faith Mitchell joined volunteers from across Los Angeles who came together for the latest Shine LA clean-up events, focusing on revitalizing neighborhoods in Downtown and Hollywood. The initiative, launched by Mayor Karen Bass, aims to restore public spaces and foster civic pride, especially in areas impacted by recent unrest. A special thanks to Councilmembers Ysabel Jurado, Huto Soto-Martinez, and Nithya Raman for your partnership.

Mayor Bass described the clean-ups as a powerful demonstration of unity and a critical step in improving perceptions of Downtown. The Mayor also highlighted that Shine LA is part of a larger effort to prepare the city to welcome global audiences during events like the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Olympics. Volunteers gathered in key Downtown locations—including Spring Street Park and El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument—to remove litter, paint curbs, plant greenery, and restore areas impacted by recent unrest.

Community leaders echoed the importance of these clean-ups in strengthening Downtown’s reputation as a safe and vibrant destination. Nella McOsker, President and CEO of Central City Association, remarked, Shine LA is a positive way for Angelenos to come together and care for our unique neighborhoods. Downtown LA, home to a thriving residential and business community, continues to face ongoing challenges — from immigration raids to general perceptions of safety. CCA was proud to support this event and highlight continued investments needed for Downtown’s success.

Shine LA events will continue monthly, engaging volunteers, city departments, and Board of Public Works members to clean, beautify, and restore public spaces across Los Angeles. Angelenos interested in joining future efforts can sign up through the Mayor’s website mayor.lacity.gov/ShineLA.
